Frigid fall waters mark the start of a new Blue Planet and Intrepid Ocean Sciences!

Fall Rumblings

Here at the end of October and into November we are finally seeing some solid swell in the North Pacific  After an incredibly active Hurricane season, the Pacific is waking up. With the Jaws contest last weekend, the promise is big for the rest of the fall and into winter. All in all, we may be stacking up for some exciting ocean activity! The new Blue Planet II being released this weekend promises to inspire us into some great learning for it all.

We're still releasing new designs of the WaveClock! You're sure to love the speedo WaveClock as well as great art from Wetfeet Photography and Ventana Surfboards and Supplies. Check them out on ETSY. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for the latest info. We'll let you know here first!

Pe'ahi Challenge was ON
In somewhat of a surprise early fall swell, the Jaws contest went off last weekend. Some incredible surfing all around, but one view of Ian Walsh's incredible barrel ride and it's clear how he scored a perfect 10.  Across the board amazing surfing.  Check out Ian's interview Here.
More Blue Planet!

Who doesn't remember the breathtaking footage and emotion evoked from the Blue Planet? To one up it, this week is the release of Blue Planet II. Sir David Attenborough still guides us through the amazing ocean world. Check it out on BBC.

Coastal Science and Arctic Amazement

Welcome to Fall Learning

We've finally made it to fall. The end of this season brought mixed fortunes to the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the Americas. Namely, the unprecedented landfall of three hurricanes, Harvey, Irma, and Maria, was responsible for tragic loss of life and property to many large coastal communities. These events underscore our continuing need to better understand the powerful, yet fragile, oceans.

I've just returned from the Oceans 2017 science conference in Alaska to learn about many of the new and improved ways we are gaining the information to help protect our coastal communities. For some communities, such as St. Johns county in Florida, there is still a battle over the near-term protection and long-term sustainability of our coastal activities. Each community has hard long-term decisions to make. In lighter news, the annual Surf Dog competition has just happened in Southern California reminding us that the coast still brings joy!

Definitely take some time to check out the new designs of the WaveClock. You're sure to love the new speedometer style as well as great art from Wetfeet Photography and Ventana Surfboards and Supplies still on ETSY. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for the latest info. We'll let you know here first!

Oceans Alaska

It is well understood that the Arctic Ocean will soon be ice free for the first time in recorded history. The changes are happening at an alarming pace. Alaska is the central hub for the science and engineering that is helping us understand these changes. Check out this informative piece.
Shore Protection Do or Don't??

Communities have weighed the need for shore protection against the long-term sustainability of such measures. In addition, these measures can also cause enhanced erosion damage to adjacent coastal areas. Read how a Florida community is dealing with the issues Here.
The Dogs Have It

To remind us that the coast brings joy, the annual Huntington Beach dog surf contest just went off. Even dogs understand the joy of sliding down the face of a wave and you can see the smiles on their faces. Check out some of the fun photos in this article!

Hurricane Harvey Support

Hurricane Harvey Support

As we are all well aware, Hurricane Harvey caused massive displacement along the Gulf Coast of Texas. If you haven't yet, please take a moment this holiday weekend and make a small donation through the Red Cross to help those that are trying to get their homes, families, and lives back in order after the storm's devastation.

Thank You for whatever you can contribute!

The WaveClock Team is supporting the Red Cross as a great relief agency for those affected by the storm.

Protected WaveClocks, Ocean Winds for Energy, and Seafloor Observations Show the Way!

Ocean Winds for Energy!

We were inspired by the first U.S. offshore wind energy farm off of Rhode Island (see below) and released the completely new designs of the WaveClock! Check them out on ETSY and enter BIGWAVES now for your 20% summer discount!

In other big news, NOAA is compiling measurements from the Gulf of Mexico and seeing the largest dead zone ever in the Gulf.  The condition arises due to lack of oxygen in the water. In more positive news, the University of Washington is maintaining their live seafloor observatory that measures seafloor volcanic activity. Some great ocean science!

Don't forget to check out the latest WaveClocks. You're sure to love the great art from Wetfeet Photography and Ventana Surfboards and Supplies. Check them out on ETSY. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for the latest info. We'll let you know here first!

Truly a Dead Zone
The hypoxic, or low oxygen, condition in the Gulf of Mexico can cause massive fish kills.  The dead zone for this summer is the largest ever measured in 32 years!  More at NOAA.

Internet of Things on the Seafloor
Researchers at the University of Washington are heading out to maintain a deep sea cabled observitory. One of the key missions is to observe life around an undersea volcanoe, the Axial Seamount. Check out more!

Secret Sweet Spots, Discovery in the Med, and Speedometers for Your Waves!

Secrets of Summer

You can be better at surfing waves by using math! A surfer and researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has solved some of the classic wave equations to show where the Sweet Spot on a wave is. It is the spot of maximum accelration to propel you forward in the wave. Check out the article below and perhaps you too can dig the math. Other inspired scientists in Malta use gliders, which are ocean exploring robots, to delve deep into the Mediterranean Sea. There's still uncharted regions all over to explore.

We've also just released the completely new designs of the WaveClock! You're sure to love the new speedometer style as well as great art from Wetfeet Photography and Ventana Surfboards and Supplies. Check them out on ETSY. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for the latest info. We'll let you know here first!

The True Sweet Spot

“Based upon the speed and geometry of the wave, you can determine the conditions to surf a wave and also where on the wave the maximum acceleration, or ‘sweet spot,’ will be located,” said a researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography after exploring classic wave mechanics. Find out more about the Sweet Spot HERE!
The WaveClock is your gateway to the ocean. The new speedometer style WaveClocks are made from single pieces of redwood and cedar with windows for the dials. These stylish WaveClocks show you at a glance what's happening with the waves and tides at your favorite spot.  The latest ones are up on our ETSY store!

Measuring the Ocean Depths

Underwater robots are an amazing idea and underwater gliders are no exception. They are being used worldwide to explore uncharted regions of the ocean. Researchers at the Univeristy of Malta are using gliders to measure the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. Learn more here.
