An Ocean of Understanding

Developing a Deeper Understanding of the Ocean

As with anything, you learn a whole lot just by showing up and watching. WaveClocks and TideClocks bring that simple understanding directly to you. With an intuitive glance you see what’s happening in the ocean without fumbling for a computer or phone to check the same forecast the crowds follow. Join the WaveClock team and develop a deeper understanding for the ocean so you can see those perfect conditions others are missing.

Surfing In an Age of Rising Seas

Sea level rise will have consequences for coastal communities worldwide. People, property, infrastructure, and the coast itself are increasingly threatened by flooding and erosion. We, as ocean lovers, want to understand: how could these threats alter our waves? Michael Monak has a good summary here (Image from arcgis.com).

Toy boats for science!

Toy boats for science!

As I have learned more about the Arctic Ocean, I am seeing that the incredible range of conditions make it one of the most fascinating places on the planet. The National Science Foundation has funded researchers to study ice conditions even further with Toy Boats! By releasing 1,500 into the Arctic Ice, they were able to track motions for years.

Where does it go?

While these aren't the exact toy boat tracks, the map shows historical drift tracks of buoys released from the North Pole Environmental Laboratory  each April between 2000 - 2014.  Read more about this fascinating data here.

Still Time for Your Perfect Gift!

The WaveClock above is made from reclaimed wine barrels made with old growth redwood. Don't worry, we're only using FSC certified reclaimed wood to ensure its all sustainably sourced. There's only a few of these unique pieces left!
