Offshore Wind Energy Grows The Offshore Wind Summit recently held in Houston, TX brough together experienced engineers from oil and gas and offshore wind developers to help bring decades of ocean experience to a new budding industry in renewable energy. Learn More! Truly a Dead Zone The hypoxic, or low oxygen, condition in the Gulf of Mexico can cause massive fish kills.  The dead zone for this summer is the largest ever measured in 32 years!  More at NOAA.   Internet of Things on the Seafloor Researchers at the University of Washington are heading out to maintain a deep sea cabled observitory. Secrets of Summer You can be better at surfing waves by using math! A surfer and researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography has solved some of the classic wave equations to show where the Sweet Spot on a wave is. It is the spot of maximum accelration to propel you forward in the wave. Check out the article below and perhaps you too can dig the math. Other inspired scientists in Malta use gliders, which are ocean exploring robots, to delve deep into the Mediterranean Sea. There's still uncharted regions all over to explore. Your support for this Kickstarter campaign will help us go beyond the functional prototypes to a refined WaveClock product and service. We have three primary goals as part of the project:   Develop robust hardware and electronics that are guaranteed to work the first time and last for many years without maintenance. The design will include a perpetual cloud environment that supports each WaveClock and its ability to connect and update over standard WiFi connections for as long as the NOAA buoy network continues to supply high quality data. Develop methods for creating the WaveClock boxes from sustainably sourced wood and preserving a unique custom feel for each clock. While each clock will have its unique beauty, they will all have a similar look and feel so that they always remain easy to read.   Refine the smart phone app to include historic data and predictions for the NOAA buoys. The NOAA data and model results provide the fundamental information driving United States surf nowcasts and forecasts ensuring the highest quality information powering each WaveClock.
