Toy boats for science! As I have learned more about the Arctic Ocean, I am seeing that the incredible range of conditions make it one of the most fascinating places on the planet. The National Science Foundation has funded researchers to study ice conditions even further with Toy Boats! By releasing 1,500 into the Arctic Ice, they were able to track motions for years.   Where does it go? While these aren't the exact toy boat tracks, the map shows historical drift tracks of buoys released from the North Pole Environmental Laboratory  each April between 2000 - 2014.  Read more about this fascinating data here. Fall Into the Ocean The air has cleared up on the coast and the Northern hemisphere is coming alive. Looking out on a clear morning, fishing boats are heading out, a few early surfers paddle out for a quick wave before work, and the smell of bacon hovers in the air from a nearby kitchen. Beyond the waves and tides, I often wonder what's happening underneath the surface we see. Researchers in Mexico are deploying deep acoustically tracked sensors to find out just what's happening down there. Also, on the surface of the ocean, Japan just took its first gold medal in surfing! Over the past decade, oceanographers released more than 150 floats throughout the Gulf of Mexico, where they followed the ocean currents over a mile below the surface. The floats are tracked acoustically using beacons throughout the Gulf that emit sounds that the floats pick up. It's yielded some fascinating ocean patterns here. The Japanese junior surfing team won their first gold medal in an International Surfing Association event. They won six medals across all competitive divisions, including a gold medal. Arctic Summer A close colleague of mine spends his summers on the coast. Granted many of us do, but he's on the North Slope of Alaska at Drew Point studying permafrost erosion. With the increasing global temps, there's less ice in the Arctic Ocean. More open water means more waves, which cause erosion of the shorelines. Ben spends his time helping to figure out what combination of elements are contributing to accelerated land loss in the Arctic. Check out the link to the latest observations below. A little lower in latitude, hurricanes are responsible for the largest coastal hazards. URI is embarking on modeling efforts to better predict and prepare for these hurricanes. See below for more! An amazing find this year yielded a ton of Redwood from 1932 Beaulieu Vineyards wine barrels.
