Coastal Science and Arctic Amazement

Welcome to Fall Learning

We've finally made it to fall. The end of this season brought mixed fortunes to the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the Americas. Namely, the unprecedented landfall of three hurricanes, Harvey, Irma, and Maria, was responsible for tragic loss of life and property to many large coastal communities. These events underscore our continuing need to better understand the powerful, yet fragile, oceans.

I've just returned from the Oceans 2017 science conference in Alaska to learn about many of the new and improved ways we are gaining the information to help protect our coastal communities. For some communities, such as St. Johns county in Florida, there is still a battle over the near-term protection and long-term sustainability of our coastal activities. Each community has hard long-term decisions to make. In lighter news, the annual Surf Dog competition has just happened in Southern California reminding us that the coast still brings joy!

Definitely take some time to check out the new designs of the WaveClock. You're sure to love the new speedometer style as well as great art from Wetfeet Photography and Ventana Surfboards and Supplies still on ETSY. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for the latest info. We'll let you know here first!

Happy and Safe Fall to Everyone!

Your New WaveClock is Here!

Oceans Alaska

It is well understood that the Arctic Ocean will soon be ice free for the first time in recorded history. The changes are happening at an alarming pace. Alaska is the central hub for the science and engineering that is helping us understand these changes. Check out this informative piece.
Shore Protection Do or Don't??

Communities have weighed the need for shore protection against the long-term sustainability of such measures. In addition, these measures can also cause enhanced erosion damage to adjacent coastal areas. Read how a Florida community is dealing with the issues Here.
The Dogs Have It

To remind us that the coast brings joy, the annual Huntington Beach dog surf contest just went off. Even dogs understand the joy of sliding down the face of a wave and you can see the smiles on their faces. Check out some of the fun photos in this article!

Check out the full WaveClock Intro!

What Are We Doing For You?

Your support for this Kickstarter campaign will help us go beyond the functional prototypes to a refined WaveClock product and service. We have three primary goals as part of the project:
  • Develop robust hardware and electronics that are guaranteed to work the first time and last for many years without maintenance. The design will include a perpetual cloud environment that supports each WaveClock and its ability to connect and update over standard WiFi connections for as long as the NOAA buoy network continues to supply high quality data.
  • Develop methods for creating the WaveClock boxes from sustainably sourced wood and preserving a unique custom feel for each clock. While each clock will have its unique beauty, they will all have a similar look and feel so that they always remain easy to read.
  • Refine the smart phone app to include historic data and predictions for the NOAA buoys. The NOAA data and model results provide the fundamental information driving United States surf nowcasts and forecasts ensuring the highest quality information powering each WaveClock. The app will allow you to view that data stream in more detail if you choose.
We look forward to sharing it all with you here on Kickstarter.

Sea Foam City

The first of the fall storms has hit the West Coast. Waves over 15 ft offshore of Santa Cruz churned up the ocean while some much needed rain blew in to help wash the land. All summer long, sediment and organic material settle on the sea floor. When the first big winds and waves arrive, they stir up this material on the bottom. We see the water turn brown and an interesting phenomenon occurs. Sea Foam.  All the organic material causes more viscous (sticky) bubbles to be formed by the wind and breaking waves. The resulting foam covers the beaches in big mats like the picture above.  A not uncommon, but amazing sight when it does happen!

This month we had a great showing at the Boardroom Surfboard Show. We teamed up with Wetfeet Photography to show some fantastic art and WaveClocks. Check out our Etsy store for the latest by clicking the button below. Stay tuned and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the latest info. We'll let you know here first!

Happy and safe fall to everyone!

Shark Attacks in New South Wales, Australia
Most surfers are quite cavalier about shark attacks.  They're rare, cars are more dangerous, they're not in my backyard, but its a real and growing problem in New South Wales. The stories are quite harrowing.Check out the story HERE!

Researchers have seen evidence lately that the Gulf Stream is slowing down. The important ocean conveyor of warm water the the North Atlantic supports vital ocean processes and weather systems. Some interesting speculations about the causes and effects.
